What's in the name?
SYNDETIC I first encountered in math. An infinite syndetic subset of natural numbers (1,2,3,...) simply has bounded gaps i.e.
the difference between subsequent members of the subsequence has an upper bound. For finite sequences this is of course
a trivial property, but for unending ones often highly useful. Higher dimensional extensions of the concept come naturally.
In real world think space, sampling environment or think time, updates of some process. Natural idea, to keep regular track.
Periodic things are of course syndetic yet often too special, too restrictive to expect. For example my updates here won't be
weekly, probably not even monthly, but they'll be syndetic. In time and and space. In my work I try not to jump mindlessly here &
there but stick to some idea/path/project for considerable amount of time. Syndetic updates hopefully ensue (with a reasonable
bound ;-).
Note that synthetic is a different concept, usually refering to the artificial ingredients or origin of a thing. I hope little of that in
these pages, just my own findings, observations and creations. No stolen stuff or AI-engineered fakes here.
If one of the projects carries to fullness, to a synthesis, like a book, that I'd welcome!
Extension CA is more ambiguous. In the Research section you'll see my interest in Cellular Automata, CA. They were originally
suggested by Ulam and von Neumann as a toy model for Life. A computable, digital version of life, an overarching idea rooting
in math, physics and biology. Hence considerable depth - many interesting results of various CAs exist, yet it is still a rather
mysterious class of models and mostly well beyond math.
On a more personal level CA refers to the edge of western world, patch of US, a state (of mind if you like...) that was crucial in my
formative years entering the scientific world. Being mentally and physically at the root of the blazing silicon universe marked me, too.
